There’s a number of ways that you can become a part of our work to ensure a brighter future for our children at the centre:
Become a member
The most common contribution to the organization – and thereby the center – is to become a member of Tanzibarn.dk. Your membership fee will help to cover the daily administration of the centre: food, payments to our dedicated local staff, medicine and much else.
As a member of the organization, you will receive our biannual newsletter and have the opportunity to participate in our annual general assembly.
Membership fee: DKK 300 (60 dollars), although anything more would be greatly appreciated!

Our administration costs are under 5%, which means that the vast majority of your contribution helps the children at the centre directly.

Visit the centre
At Tanzibarn.dk, we value the interaction between Denmark and Tanzania, and everyone is more than welcome to visit the centre in Usa River! At the centre, you can get a guided tour around the premises and talk to volunteers, children and staff. There might even be time to play with the children, but remember: they spend a lot of time doing homework and other chores, especially the older children, so there’s no guarantee they’ll have time for it.
There are two possibilities regarding visits:
one is a relatively quick visit, where you drop in for a few hours, or less. To make the best of the visit, we would like to know in advance – at the latest the day before. You can write our manager Alexander Akilimali Blair at bakilimali@gmail.com or by phone at +255784141676.
- Visitors in the courtyard
If you wish, it is also possible to visit the centre for a longer period. This could be if you’re a former volunteer or related to any of the current volunteers. Since life at the centre is sometimes busy, especially in the summer when a lot of people want to visit, this has to be coordinated as well. You do that by writing the volunteers at usariver@gmail.com preferably as soon as possible.
To avoid confusion amongst the children, it’s only allowed present volunteers to stay overnight at the centre. But there are many cheap, local places close to the centre to stay for the night in Usa River. Staff and volunteers will be glad to help.
Earlier a lot of the people visiting the centre brought gifts for the children –and for that we are very grateful. But to make sure that the children are not getting too spoiled compared to the rest of the children in Usa River, we now prefer that guests don’t serve sodas or candy, but instead buy some fruit or snack vegetables, donate some money to the organization, join the organization or donate some of the things that are on the centre’s want list. We hope this doesn’t make us sound ungrateful, and we ask for your understanding.
